How often do you look at the stars at night?
Living in a city environment I don’t even bother to notice the light coming from the stars. And why would I when there are all sorts of lights coming from different sources- traffic lights, street lights, car lights, flashy advertisements, shop windows, lighted monuments, signs and channel letters illuminated with neon… a wide range of artificial lights that almost cover the dim natural lighting from the stars.
I am thrilled and excited when I can see the stars at night. And that always happens when I am somewhere away from a crowded city environment.
It creates a sense of infinity and romanticism at the same time. Sort of a parallel world, distinct from the real one.
Observing the sky makes you wonder what exists beyond that what you can capture with your eyes. If the Earth is the only place that’s always “happening” or is there another way of life out there in the universe?
Some questions will perhaps remain a mystery, but it’s a nice feeling you get, a kind of meditative ritual. I should repeat it more often, that’s something I know for sure!
“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
“I like the night. Without the dark, we’d never see the stars.”
― Stephenie Meyer, Twilight
“Not just beautiful, though – the stars are like the trees in the forest, alive and breathing. And they’re watching me.”
― Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore
