I feel that my Bali trip was like a first love you never forget. We (my two girlfriends and I) arrived late in the night after three days spent in Singapore, so we couldn’t see much of the island at first.
Hotel was in the southern part of the island (Benoa), clean and authentic for a tropical paradise and the staff was warm and welcoming.
It was funny that, before we have started the journey, we were recommended by a doctor not to drink any tab water or any kind of drink on ice. At the time we arrived at the hotel, we were welcomed with a nice cocktail on ice and after drinking half of it, we remembered what we were told, smiled to each other and continued drinking in order not to offence the hosts, hoping that everything would turn out just fine.
Next day started on a beach just across the hotel- Benoa beach. Low tide was evident and there were different kinds of boats parked there, which made the beach not very suitable for swimming. The hotel offered a very comfortable swimming pool area, with sun beds and umbrellas, but the beach did not leave impression as tropical heaven or anything like it.
We made a reservation for the evening in a sea food restaurant in Jimbaran area. We had a chance to choose from a broad variety of sea food. As long as we got our drinks and made a toast for an unforgettable vacation, it started raining. Every single guest in the restaurant disappeared somehow because of the bad weather and we were left alone with the staff on the porch hiding from the rain.
It hit me then- melancholic feeling for being far away from home to a place that did not seem to offer much so far.
Luckily that feeling did not last long. The guys that worked in the restaurant recommended a club in the center of Kuta area. Night life seemed to be one of the high lights on our vacation. We realized that later on.
The place was called Paddy’s. Most of the people there were native Australian and I have never ever thought of how handsome the Australian guys looked. I looked at my girlfriends- were they as thrilled as I was or was it just me? It was a hell of a night life over there… We got back to the hotel in the early morning hours after partying all night long.
Kuta area was approximately half an hour by car from Benoa, where our hotel was. The beach was wide and large, with big surfing waves, also not very suitable for swimming.
“So that was the reason why all these surfers from last night actually visited the island”- I thought.
Our night life did not stop then and there, we partied every night with no exception and met a lot of other amusing, funny, nice and handsome guys. And we got used to the first class world of parties. But it wasn’t all about parties.
We had four whole- days of excursions on the island- rain forests, Bali rice terraces, wood carvings, Hindu temples (the largest was Mother Temple), visit of a traditional Balinese village, Monkey forests, western part of the island called Tanah Lot (we observed a wonderful sunset from this spot), Balinese Sea in the north, we witnesses a praying ceremony and the profound dedication of the people while doing it, and so on. We enjoyed Balinese kitchen, which was truly amazing and soaked in the sun in the days when it did not rain (luckily we had a couple of sunny days at the beginning of the rainy season). We had a close observation of the Balinese culture- customs and traditions, that pretty much amazed me.
Being around people so passionate about surfing, made me give it a try. I took private lesson with a guy who was offering it on the beach. I did not get to the point to catch a wave, but I surely had a lot of fun.
Rafting was a fascinating one day experience and I must admit it was one of the best days on the vacation- beautiful untouched nature in the heart of Bali, I did not take camera with me, but those pictures are still so clear in my mind. Waterfalls in the middle of the track, where we made a small break, before we continued to the end of the adventure. Whenever I try to still my mind and to meditate, I think of this scenery and experience the joy and the thrill over and over again.
Long time after this trip I could not recover from the beauty that bedazzled me. I truly hope to come back again! And again and again…
